Home Screen

Once you are logged in and the onboarding is completed, opening the beem app will always show the home screen. The home screen provides you with the most important actions and vital status information.

beemNet Status Indicators & Their Meaning

These status indicators help users quickly understand whether they are protected, connected, and able to access company resources. Below is an explanation of each status and what it represents.

Protection

If this status is green you are protected from online threats, and your browsing is kept secure and private. If this status is red, you are not protected and are connected directly to the internet or another potentially insecure network. Protection is provided if your device uses a network interface connected to the beemNet, or if you are using the beem app, or both. When connected to an unknown network or the internet without active encryption, you are not connected to beemNet and hence not protected. The status does not indicate the strictness or sustainability of the protection level. For more details, refer to the Security Dashboard or contact your administrator, as their chosen configuration affects your protection level.

Encryption

If this status is green, it indicates an active encrypted VPN connection with the beemNet. If this status is red, it signifies no such connection. While maintaining the encrypted connection may slightly increase battery usage, it is highly recommended to keep the encryption active to ensure privacy and security. When connected to an unknown network or the internet without active encryption, you are not connected to beemNet. Hence, your browsing activities are not secure, nor do you have access to company data and business applications.

Company data

This status is available only when using the beem Basic, Plus, or Premium Security Edition. When connected to the beemNet, your status will be either “black & white” or green, depending on whether encryption is active. A green status indicates that you have access to company data and business applications, while a “black & white” status signifies limited or no access, as determined by your beem administrator. If there is no connection to the beemNet, the status will be red, which restricts access to any company data and business applications. It is important to note that even with a green status, access to individual business applications remains subject to additional restrictions imposed by your beem administrator.

Offline

If none of the device’s network interfaces (such as mobile data, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet) are connected to an active network, the beem app will cease functioning, and the device will lose its connection to beemNet.

In this state, a permanent toast message will appear, informing the user that the device is offline and prompting them to reconnect to the Internet.

No connection to beemNet

When a connection to beemNet is unavailable, all related status indicators will turn red. As a result, the device is no longer protected and cannot access company data or business applications.

This condition may be caused by:

  • A network or system failure
  • A user-initiated action (e.g., manually disconnecting)

Depending on the Fail-Mode settings configured by the beem administrator, the user may also lose all Internet access. In such cases, a permanent toast message will appear, informing the user of the restricted state.

For more information, refer to the section titled Understanding Fail-Mode, Restricted and Limited Access.

No Encryption May Lead to Access Restrictions

The beem administrator’s Fail-Mode settings determine whether a device retains unprotected Internet access when the encrypted beemNet VPN tunnel is inactive. For more information on how the VPN tunnel works, see Understanding How the beem App Connects You Securely. Upon the beem administrators’ choice access to corporate data and business applications is likely going to depend on encryption. If Fail-Mode is set to “fail-open”, Internet access (protected or not) is retained.

If Fail-Mode is set to “fail-close,” two outcomes are possible:

  • Restricted Access: "All" access is denied to protect security.
  • Limited Access: Protected Internet access remains available, however, most corporate resources remain inaccessible.

In both cases, a permanent toast message will inform the user whether access is restricted or limited. For further details, refer to Understanding Fail-Mode, Restricted and Limited Access.

Unknown

When the beem App is uncertain about the next stable status, it temporarily enters a state marked by a question mark, with all other statuses greyed out. This can occur right after opening the app or while connecting to or disconnecting from the beemNet. The display duration of this status depends on network quality and conditions.

Home Screen Features & Interactive Elements

To help users navigate the application efficiently, the home screen features several interactive buttons. The following section provides an overview of these buttons and their respective functions.

Main button

There is a wide button on the home screen that adjusts its functionality based on the state of the beem App, user preferences, and settings configured by your beem administrator. Connect to beemNet, Disconnect from the beemNet and Encrypt connection are the variants provided. When clicked or tapped, the action may either be executed immediately or trigger a popup with additional context-sensitive options, depending on the situation.

Settings menu

The settings menu is represented by this icon in the upper right corner of the home screen of the app. For more details on what settings exist, refer to the documentation in the section Personalization & Configuration.
